A major stretch of Tauranga highway with a history of crashes will soon be safer.
A median barrier is to be installed on State Highway 29 on the Te Maunga side of the Maungatapu bridge.
The 1.3km flexible median barrier, which will cost about $900,000, will be installed from the existing concrete barrier to the start of the bridge.
Associated works will include passing lane length reduction, pavement widening, earthworks, service relocations, traffic signs and markings.
New Zealand Transport Agency highways manager Brett Gliddon said there was a history of crashes at the site.
