Brenda and Terry Smith have been stalwart members of the Mount Maunganui RSA since joining in the early 1980s after moving to the area.

Mrs Smith, 79, has been president of the women's division for the past 14 years and is also district president of the Waikato/King Country/ Bay of Plenty and Coromandel RSA women's division. Her 81-year-old husband is vice president of Mount RSA, which has just over 4500 members.

Mrs Smith said Anzac Day was important for them and RSA members. "It is vital we never forget what other people did during wartime so young New Zealanders today can enjoy the freedoms they fought for and are able to live comfortable lives.

"It's fantastic to see so many young people turning up. Only a few years ago there was about one quarter of the young people who attended last year."
