A group of about 50 Tauranga and Mt Maunganui people got together yesterday as part of a global movement against violence towards women, begun after the rape of a woman in India who died from her injuries.
Organiser Jody Hopkinson said the purpose of the event at the Edgewater Fan
Stage on The Waterfront was to raise the profile of the issue of violence against women. She said about 50 people had gathered to honour the movement in Tauranga.
Many had come from social agencies, playcentres, Zumba groups and were joined by supporters and friends of the organisers.
"The goal is to get one billion women and the men who love them rising up to dance, sing, chant, flashmob, and to say enough."
