Updated 5.34pm:

A large fire in Papamoa has been extinguished but the garage and a small flat have been gutted.

Emergency services were called to the Tara Rd fire just before 1pm today.

The residents were burning rubbish in steel drums when the wind caused the fence beside the garage to catch on fire. The fire quickly engulfed the garage and made its way into the adjoining flat.

Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters battled the blaze.

Firefighters are battling a large shed fire in Papamoa.

Emergency services were called to Tara Rd about 1.15pm to put out the fire.

Northern Communications Fire shift manager Tania Matthews said firefighters were at the scene.

"It was well involved when they arrived. They're still there now," she said.

The shed is thought to be about 6 metres by 10 metres.

A witness said the fire was "pretty large" and there were flames coming out of the roof and windows.

"It was a pretty decent fire, there was a lot of smoke and flames."

Emergency services are still at the scene of the blaze.
