A mystery car found upside down at Pukehina sparked a late night search effort by local police and firefighters.

The car was called in to emergency services at 11.15pm because it was found upside down and in a drain on the side of Pukehina Beach Rd.

A northern communications spokesman said the brigade searched for about an hour assisting local police but no one was found.

A tow truck was called and the car was believed to be involved in an accident.

Katikati firefighters were called to a car fire on Henry Rd at 2.11am today.
