An exciting new hydroslide is planned for Tauranga's Baywave aquatic centre but only if the council can be convinced it will make a good profit.
With the existing hydroslide regarded as too tame for thrillseekers, the council is looking at ways to boost revenue from its financially troubled pools company, Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd (TCAL).
Instead of spending $600,000 to increase the flexibility of Baywave's children's pool by installing a moveable floor, the council has opted to investigate diverting the money into a bigger and faster hydroslide.
Mayor Stuart Crosby told the Bay of Plenty Times the council wanted to refresh the fun part of Baywave.
But with the council already having to find an extra $1.2 million this year to repay the loan chalked up by the abandoned Mount Hot Pools redevelopment project, plus a $1 millon deficit in TCAL's accounts, the council was nervous about embarking on a major new project.
