The smile says it all - there is nothing like catching your first wave no matter how big or small it is.
It was no different for 27-year-old Sharon Goldfarb, a tax lawyer from Holland, who yesterday ventured into the waves with the New Zealand Surf School at Tay St, Mount Maunganui. Ms Goldfarb, who is travelling around New Zealand with her friends Sabine Oordjik and Esther De Munnik, decided to make the most of a warm day and hit the water.
After a short lesson on the sand from instructor Tim Nottingham, where the three women were taught how to paddle and stand-up on the board, it was time for action. Apparently the lessons paid off.
The three ventured into the surf and after only a few minutes it was Ms Goldfarb who sighted a small wave. After a few strokes, she leapt to her feet and was off. It wasn't the biggest wave you'll see but she milked it for all it was worth and rode it all the way into shore.
Clearly delighted by the ride, she reckons the experience could help her on her future travels.
"We are going to Fiji next. Maybe we can surf there as well. Maybe after that we can go to Hawaii _ one two-hour lesson, you can go anywhere!" she joked.
Mr Nottingham, who has been giving surf lessons for four years, said he tried to keep things simple when teaching beginner surfers.
"We just try and get their technique right," he said.
"They're not out there to do any manoeuvres. It's all about just about standing up."
Mission accomplished for Ms Goldfarb.
