Vibe off for contentious Tiki Taane song

By Sandra Conchie

Tiki Taane's planned encore performance of the controversial song at Illuminati Superclub which led to his arrest last April did not go ahead because it wasn't the "right vibe" to do so.

The 35-year-old singer, who moved to Papamoa last January, was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour likely to incite violence in the early hours of April 10 for singing a track by rap group NWA which is derogatory to police at the same time officers walked through the club.

Police dropped the charge in September following mediation.<inline type="recurring-inline" id="1003" align="outside" enforce-sites="no" />

Taane told the Bay of Plenty Times last week that he planned to sing the song again in his first appearance at Illuminati since the arrest.

Taane said it was not a reluctance on his part to sing the controversial lyrics which led to its absence from his playlist on Friday night.

"During my set I try to create a certain vibe, to create a mood which makes me feel it's the right time to perform this song. The lyrics and the song are quite intense and needs the right mood, the right vibe for me to play it and the mood just didn't seem right that night."

Taane said he had a lot of songs in his repertoire.

"I play this song at certain times and not at others. Sometimes I can get so lost in the mood that I forget to play it and Friday was also one of those times. Like many other songs with explicit lyrics I won't play them unless there is the certain vibe.

"It's crazy how much attention this particular song has got."

He said despite his arrest and the controversy it won't stop him playing it.

Tauranga police Senior Sergeant Karl Purcell said there had been no reports of trouble at the club on Friday.
