Sustainable Backyards has had a big month of raising awareness about how we can live in harmony with the environment and it culminates in a Climate Change Speakers' Forum tomorrow.
Why should people take part? Climate change is happening now, says Sustainable Backyards co-ordinator Sarah Errico.
"We can already seethe impact of climate change. It is happening now in the Pacific with the rise of the sea. It is everybody's problem and we have to understand what the impacts will be, especially for the north of the North Island. We need to know what our Government is going to do, and what are the next steps are for business and for individuals." The forum will start with Emmy Award-winning movie Chasing Ice, followed by talks from experts:
Professor James Renwick, Physical Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences; Victoria University; Professor of Sustainable Energy, and Director of the Centre for Energy Research, Ralph Sims from Massey University; award-winning journalist, Rod Oram; Climate change policy development expert, Chris Karamea Insley. Their ideas will put the issue of climate change into perspective as well as provide information on what government policy is.
"The evening will be very worthwhile. It doesn't have to be depressing. We are hoping to galvanise people to find solutions and we will have local organisations there so people can find out what local initiatives are," says Ms Errico.
