Two women killed while fleeing a bushfire in Western Australia died just 20m from the safety of a dam full of water.
Confused by smoke and intense heat, they abandoned their vehicle during Saturday's fire, leaving behind their dog which survived in the car. The bushfire threatened Tenterden, 330km south of Perth.
The bodies of the women were found 150-200m from their house, and within 20m and 150m of two dams. Two young men with them took refuge behind a water tank and survived.
