More than 9000 people took Australian citizenship in Australia Day ceremonies across the nation yesterday, while leaders highlighted the values of tolerance, mateship and compassion.
Governor-General Michael Jeffery led 75 new Australians in a citizenship ceremony at Caloundra's Kings Beach Park in Queensland.
The Governor-General said Australia had much to be proud of.
"We're a cohesive, tolerant society - one that's been enriched by ancient indigenous cultures and successive waves of immigrants."
In Melbourne, the largest Australian flag ever to be raised from an aircraft, RAAF F-111s, marching bands and colourful street performers were among the huge range of attractions at the celebrations.
