A drunk man has reportedly driven home in an ambulance after mistaking it for his car parked outside a hospital.
The 30-year-old businessman thought the ambulance was his Audi until he arrived home 13km away from the hospital in Chennai, the India Times reported.
The man only realised his blunder when his family asked where his Audi was.
A hospital source told police the man appeared to be looking for a taxi around 3am, but then climbed into an unlocked ambulance and drove away.
Staff then called the police after assuming he was trying to steal the ambulance.
However, a police officer said a man, an employee of the drunk driver, returned in the ambulance and "profusely apologised saying his boss had mistakenly driven it home".
The man paid for repairs on a damaged rear-view mirror.
The hospital has lodged a complaint however it is not known if the man was charged with drink driving.
