A dramatic dog rescue has lifted spirits amid a week of deadly torrential rains and flooding caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon in Peru.
The dog was left stranded on a rock in the middle of a swollen Chili River in Arequipa, Peru, and was forced to make a leap a faith to survive.
In the video, bystanders are heard screaming as the dog splashes into the water and is swept away by the strong current.
The young pup then tried to climb the walls of a bridge but, overcome by exhaustion, tumbled back into the thundering water.
Desperate onlookers watched as the brave dog battled against the tide, eventually making it to the shore line where he was scooped up into the arms of a taxi driver.
The driver later told the media that he could not stand by and watch the dog die.
"It's like a human being, no one would allow a dog to die," he said.
