Fiction author Anna Ryan is working on her third book and it will be the second instalment of her detective series Sly and Hokey.

The Whanganui writer is just 24 but she is inspired more by writers like Stephen King and Agatha Christie than contemporary authors like Stephenie Meyer.

"I haven't even read the Twilight series," she says.

She is a JK Rowling fan though and she likes Jodi Picoult's books.

"I really like the suspense of the horror genre and I come up with ideas for my own stories when I read them."

Ryan's first book The Lady in the Coat was inspired by a woman she saw in the street one day.

"She looked mysterious and I created a character who appears to float around the streets in a coat with a collar that covers her face."

Ryan's characters use modern, New Zealand vernacular and she enjoys writing dialogue that lightens the plots of her books she says.

A young man named Isaac and his accountant friend Axton follow the lady in the coat around the streets of a generic town trying to discover what she's up to and whether she really kidnapped a man.

"I have used a visual map that resembles Whanganui but the streets have different names," says the writer.

Having two books published and working on a third may seem an impressive achievement for someone in their mid-20s but Ryan also works without an editor or agent and self publishes through Amazon.

"It allows them to be purchased in both ebook and paperback versions by a worldwide audience."

She does her own marketing as well and has established her own company Paw Print Publications and Distribution LTD.

"I will be able to streamline everything when my website is complete," she says.

Her parents act as her proof readers she says and they offer good feedback.

"Mum is a very prolific reader and she reads all genres.

"She gives me good, honest feedback and people online sometimes offer reviews."

The printed copies of her books come in A4 size with striking black and white photos on the covers.

"I can print them to order and they retail for $20 locally and $25 elswhere."
