A Wanganui man was killed when his car crashed after hitting ice in a Taranaki underpass early on Sunday.
Russel John Reid, aged 40, was the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the bank at the Tariki underpass on SH3 at 4am. Two Wanganui men, both in their 40s,were passengers. The front-seat passenger received moderate to serious injuries and was in a stable condition at Taranaki Base Hospital. A third man was treated for minor injuries and discharged. A section of SH3 between Inglewood and Stratford was closed for at least five hours for examination and clean-up. Senior Sergeant Allan Whaley, of New Plymouth police, said the car struck ice and went off the road, but it was too early to comment on other possible factors.
