Like the Queen, Margaret Brown celebrates her birthday over a few days.
"I'm her senior, by a few months," she jokes at her 90th birthday party.
The Wanganui artist's celebrations included a trip to the World of Wearable Arts show in Wellington on Sunday, shouted by her brother, and alunch out yesterday.
The presence of her daughter, Tracy Brown from Brisbane, daughter Laurelle Lomath of Wanganui and other friends and family was the icing on the cake for Mrs Brown to mark her 90th birthday.
She has lived in Wanganui since 1947 and has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She didn't scream or run away from the writhing eels.
"We just put our feet up and they went underneath."
Mrs Brown has been an artist for many of her 90 years and was the first of the city's "living treasures" to exhibit at a special series of events organised by the Community Arts Centre.
She can't be pigeonholed, "using every medium - fabric, paint, drawings, embroidery, fantasy art dolls", says a friend.
Asked what has been her favourite part of her birthday celebrations, Mrs Brown gestures to everyone around her noisy birthday table at the Springvale Cafe.
