A honeymooning couple had to be rescued from the Whanganui River yesterday afternoon after a man flipped out of his kayak at Mosquito Point and became stranded in the river.
The couple, on holiday from the UK, had just launched from the point and were heading down the river tothe Top Ten Holiday Park when the man came out of his kayak. He managed to cling to a log in the river.
Sergeant Andy Reid said emergency services, including fire, ambulance and police, were called to the swimming spot at 4.30pm. Another man had swum out to help the tourist and hung on to the log with him. Mr Reid said both kayakers had life jackets on "which was a saving grace".
Another police officer had used one of the kayaks to rescue the pair.
The male tourist, who did not want to be named, said it was great the response had been so quick.
