Several fronts cross New Zealand embedded in a disturbed west to southwest flow, with gales in many areas. A ridge of high pressure then builds from the west late on Sunday.

Forecast:

Gale warning. Thursday: Southerly 15 knots, changing northwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots by mid-morning, and rising to 30 knots gusting 45 knots late morning. Becoming northwest 35 knots gusting 45 knots early afternoon, then easing to 20 knots gusting 30 knots but 25 knots gusting 35 knots about the south coast in the evening. Sea becoming very rough for a time in the afternoon and early evening. Cloudy periods, with poor visibility in showers and possible thunderstorms from afternoon.

Outlook until midnight Sunday: Friday: Northwest easing to 15 knots in the morning, changing southerly 25 knots in the afternoon. Mainly fine, but showers from afternoon. Saturday: Southerly 30 knots, easing. Becoming northwest 15 knots later. A few morning showers, then fine spells. Sunday: Changing southerly 30 knots. Cloudy periods, a few showers.
