Aucklanders will soon know what will replace the felled pine on One Tree Hill, but it will take up to 50 years for a new tree to become established.
The Auckland City Council has applied for a resource consent to plant a grove of six pohutukawa trees and three totara trees to improve the odds of a tree surviving in windswept conditions.
Hearings commissioner Suzanne Sinclair indicated a decision would be made urgently.
