An increase in community support and awareness ticked all the boxes for Alzheimers Whanganui's Memory Walk event.

The walk was held on Saturday and manager Wendy Patterson said there was a noticeable change in response.

"We think we had more public support than in the past couple of years," Patterson said.

"The number of walkers was down a bit but there were more people coming to the marquee at the Whanganui River Market, making inquiries and purchasing things.

"It was a really good day. It was beautiful weather and it was great to see people there dressed in purple. The support from the whole community has been fabulous."

Local businesses sponsored prizes and the Rapid Relief Team supplied the marquee, barbecue and food.

"They were fantastic and all the money came to us," Patterson said.

"It is World Alzheimers Month and the big thing was to raise awareness - which we did."

Patterson said the amount raised had not yet been confirmed.
