Economic development agency Whanganui and Partners is aiming to support and promote local businesses during August, labelling it "Biz Buzz Month".
"It's an opportunity to promote all of Whanganui's unique business environment," Whanganui and Partners business development strategic lead Rhonda Morris said.
"We have an amazing, rich history of business in Whanganui, from industrial to home-based and web-based businesses. We want to make people aware of what's around."
The programme of events includes the launch of two trades training courses at UCOL Whanganui.
The New Zealand Certificates in Infrastructure Works and Commercial Road Transport are funded by the Tertiary Education Commission and have no fees for eligible students.
"It's exciting because straight out of qualification there's jobs waiting," Morris said.
"We hope to become the North Island if not the nationwide hub for trades training."
The new courses will be launched at the UCOL Atrium, Rutland St, at 12 noon on Monday, August 6. Information about other courses will also be available.
During August, business owners will be invited to complete a survey about what their business needs and whether Whanganui and Partners can help.
"We will also have workshops in social media and marketing," Morris said.
"There will be networking events where we hope similar types of businesses can gain mentorships and support."
On Saturday, August 25, the bottom block of Victoria Ave will be closed to traffic between 1.30pm and 3pm for a "Bake Off".
Whanganui eateries have been invited to bring their signature dish for judging by a celebrity panel. An outdoor cafe will be set up with food for sale and entertainment.
