Taihape Police Constable Justin Moore said fatigue, complacency and impatience catch most drivers out and are absolute killers at this time of the year.
"I want to remind people that this time of year can be extremely dangerous on the roads, with weather conditions such as ice and snow being factors. Police have attended too many recent traffic crashes where the weather has played a part."
Moore said drivers should take regular breaks.

"If you see one of us out walking the beat or at the station feel free to approach us for a chat as we want to work with the community to make it a safer and better place."
Moore has been in Taihape for 12 years after serving six years in and around South Auckland.
"We made the move to Taihape six years ago for a change of lifestyle. My wife and four young children really enjoy what Taihape has to offer.''
The Taihape Policing area is widespread and includes the Waiouru area, he said.
"We look after the area from north of Waiouru on the Desert Road to just south of Mangaweka, half way over the Taihape/Napier Road towards Hawke's Bay and west out to Turakina Valley road."
Moore said although the Taihape team is small, they are a dedicated team of officers.
We all work a roster of early, late and swing shifts with staff always on call outside of these times.
"We are able to be contacted and we encourage anyone to report anything that may seem out of place or suspicious to the local police. They can also report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
Moore said it's good to remind people that Taihape has a dedicated police presence.
"We care about the Taihape community and are always here to help.''
Taihape's youth aid officer, Senior Constable [Yvonne] Sicely is also on the Taihape Community Board and three other officers have moved to Taihape from Auckland, he said.
"Taihape is a great town to live and bring up children. I'm always pleased I made the decision to move down here."
