Diversions are in place at one of Whanganui's busiest intersections after a car hit a power pole at 6.35am this morning.

The driver of the vehicle was assessed by St John's medical staff at the scene, but transport to the hospital was not required.

Electricty workers are on site repairing the pole at the base of St Johns Hill at the intersection with London St, Victoria Ave and Great North Rd.

2200 Whanganui customers were without power following the incident, but Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh said that number was reduced to 60 by mid-morning.

Work was underway to replace the pole and it was hoped that the supply would be fully restored by 5pm, Mr Marsh said.
