National Party MP and Minister of Defence Mark Mitchell is to visit Whanganui on Thursday.

Mr Mitchell, who took over the portfolio in April, will be speaking at Wanganui RSA from 10.30am.

He spent some time growing up at Base Auckland at Whenuapai because his father served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

A former police officer, Mr Mitchell came into Parliament in 2011 as the MP for Rodney.

He has been chairman of Parliament's Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee and in 2016 was appointed the Minister for Land Information and Associate Minister of Justice.

Last year he visited New Zealand Defence Force personnel at Camp Taji in Iraq with Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee and former Labour Party leader Andrew Little.
