Painter Dennis Clark came to live in Whanganui a year ago and he likes what he sees.
Whanganui Fine Arts Gallery artists have taken a shine to him as well and have invited him to exhibit as a guest artist.
Since moving to New Zealand from South Africa nine years ago, Clark and his family have travelled to different parts of the country from their Auckland base.
His exhibition named Glimpses of New Zealand captures scenes, people and a couple of animals he has encountered along the way.
"I met that man in Christchurch not long before the earthquakes," says Clark of his painting of an elderly man wearing an antique fire helmet.
"They were having a celebration of the Fire Service in the square and he was a retired fireman of about 90."
Most of Clark's paintings are landscapes rendered in oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels and pen and ink.
"I started painting when I was very young and I taught for many years but I work for pleasure now," he said.
Clark says he has moved to Whanganui with his wife, Anne, and their son's family.
"We all loved Whanganui when we came here for the first time and now we all live in a two-storey house in Gonville."
The exhibition includes some scenes from the Whanganui region and Clark says he plans to capture many more local scenes.
Glimpses of New Zealand can be viewed at Whanganui Fine Arts Gallery, 17 Taupo Quay until August 20. Open 10am-3pm. Closed Mondays.
