A young man accused of trying to stab a police officer during a scuffle appeared in the Whanganui District Court yesterday.
Kyle Downey, 20, has not yet entered a plea to a charge of assaulting a police officer by stabbing or cutting, and another charge of common assault.
The common assault charge relates to Downey's father.
Police were trying to enter Downey's house in the early hours of September 3 due to concerns for his safety, a police summary of facts said.
Downey's father was called and drove from out of town to try and reach his son.
The complainant was climbing through a window of the house when Downey allegedly punched him in the face, breaking his glasses and cutting his nose.
Downey is then said to have got into a "scuffle" with his father, which a police officer broke up.
It is alleged Downey then grabbed a 20cm kitchen knife and tried to stab the officer with it. Downey was arrested after a scuffle.
He has been remanded on bail to September 29 for a plea.
