Sandra Brunner's natural health practice at the Self Care Clinic in Aramoho is a restful place with pleasant aromas wafting through the rooms and birdsong outside the windows.
Originally from Switzerland, Sandra said she had a lifelong interest in natural therapies and learned reflexology while working in a Chinese health centre.
"The training that was available in Switzerland was very expensive and there was nothing like the Naturopathic College of New Zealand in New Plymouth available at the time.
"I settled in Wanganui because I had been here twice before visiting friends I met in Mexico, and it felt like the right place for me."
Sandra has now lived in Wanganui for nine years and is a fully qualified naturopath.
She has been practising natural therapies in Wanganui since 2006, offering "body, mind and soul therapy" and works part-time at a local health shop.
"I always do a thorough initial consultation with new clients to work out what their needs are.
"The follow-up sessions are important to support the ongoing healing process and lifestyle changes."
Treatment can incorporate reflexology (a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands), reiki (hands-on healing), massage and stress management tools. Cell salts, flower essences, homoeobotanicals and herbal, supplemental and aromatherapy treatments are used as well as nutritional advice.
Sandra says she provides a personalised treatment plan and collaboration with other health care providers is suggested if necessary.
"It is very important to get a comprehensive profile of a person to address the underlying cause of health issues and know what their health goals are, so you can treat the client on a mental, emotional and physical level," she says.
"I would like everyone to experience good health and well-being and promoting self-care is part of the treatment."
Sandra said her clients enjoy coming to her quiet, leafy street where they can also access the services of other practitioners who offer treatments and advice that compliment Sandra's work.
"I have some older clients who sometimes don't have transport and I am able to provide a mobile service when necessary.
"I really enjoy working with Wanganui people and I have made some very good friends here - Wanganui is a great place to live."
"I get most of my clients through word-of-mouth recommendations."
Sandra said she had chosen a career in naturopathy because it provided an opportunity to empower the individual.
