A man who was part of a group that nicked a trailer-load of firewood was sentenced in Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.

Jayden Tilby and his friends arrived at the commercial property in Springvale on September 27, and parked out of view from the road, police prosecutor Sergeant Drew Morrison said.

The group loaded the truck with firewood from around the property and left. They were stopped by police on Fitzherbert Ave, and told officers the firewood was free.

Tilby pleaded guilty to theft of $200 worth of firewood.

"There was a sign somewhere in the yard that said free wood," defence lawyer Anna Brosnahan said. "They took the wood that obviously wasn't free."

Judge David Cameron said Tilby was "developing quite a history of dishonesty offences at a fairly young age, which is unfortunate".

He sentenced him to 75 hours of community work.
