When gallery owner and artist Rena Star put a call out for artists to take part in an exhibition about Puanga-Matariki, she didn't expect the response she got.
More than 20 artists are represented in Reflections, which will be on display at Gallery On Guyton until July 30.
"People were still ringing up the day before the exhibition opened, asking if they could submit a piece," Ms Star said.
Artworks of all mediums make up the exhibition, from painting to sculpture to jewellery.
"The theme was Puanga, but it was open to interpretation," Ms Star said.
It's the first time Gallery On Guyton has held a Puanga exhibition, she said. "We just wanted to celebrate Wanganui's unique midwinter festival."
All the artists are local, except for Blenheim-based Sue James, who used to live in Wanganui. There are some artists exhibiting for the first time, and others who have been exhibiting for years.
Artist Leonie Sharp said the name Reflections came from the tradition of reflecting on both the past and the future during Puanga.
"At Puanga, people stopped and reflected on the year that had been, and planned their year ahead. It's an opportunity to look at what we've done and where we've been," Ms Sharp said.
The exhibition also contains a board for visitor to stop and write their reflections on.
Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 11am-4pm.
