Some of the best young classical musicians in the North Island will be performing in Wanganui this weekend.
Ten chamber music ensembles will take part in the New Zealand Chamber Music secondary schools regional showcase, to be held at the Prince Edward Auditorium on Saturday.
The 10 ensembles are the top two groups from each regional secondary school chamber music competition held recently in Wanganui, Taranaki, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and Wellington.
Ingrid Culliford from Chamber Music Wanganui said the concert promised to an be an outstanding event.
"It will showcase the musical talent and commitment of these young musicians," she said.
Ms Culliford said the variety of groups was broad. Music featured will include a Rachmaninov piano trio, a Glazunov string quartet, New Zealand compositions by David Hamilton and Christopher Norton, songs by Vaughan Williams, a trumpet quartet, a klezmer-style trio, and music by Algerian composer Marc Eychenne, performed by Wanganui trio, Trio Exotique.
"The groups will also receive some mentoring, a demonstration and feedback on their performances by two of New Zealand's rising international music stars, Bryony Cornish-Gibson and Natalie Lin, both former winners of the national finals of the secondary schools chamber music contest," Ms Culliford said.
She said the regional showcase this year was a non-competitive trial format which Chamber Music NZ is hoping to make competitive next year and these will feed into the national finals.
Regional Showcase, Prince Edward Auditorium, Wanganui Collegiate School, 2pm, June 21. Tickets available at the door, adults $10, children and students free.
