A forestry worker died yesterday after being crushed by a log while working in a forestry block in Brunswick.
The man, described by police as a local in his 30s, was in a group undertaking forestry work about 5km along Tokomaru West Rd. The man was involved in the felling of a tree when he sustained fatal injuries, police say.
Emergency services were notified about 9.45am that a man had suffered a "traumatic injury".
An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We got a call from a member of the public about a person who had suffered injuries and who subsequently died at the scene."
It is believed the man was found at the bottom of an embankment.
The fire service were called in to assist police in recovering the man's body from the forestry block.
The land in the area is very steep and rugged, and emergency workers had difficulty in retrieving the man's body.
At one stage, police were considering calling in a helicopter to help with the recovery but that did not eventuate.
There are no suspicious circumstances and the death will be referred to the coroner. The Department of Labour will also be advised.
Police refused to give details about the man's injuries or the cause of his death.
He is expected to be named later today.
