Donations of money and muesli bars and sweets for the "university army" in Christchurch continue to pour in to Castlecliff School.
Senior student Zac Clark told his mother Joy that he wanted to collect muesli bars and sweets for the university students cleaning the streets of solidified liquefaction which kicked off a collection which has attracted donations from Wanganui locals, Palmerston North and Auckland.
Mrs Clark said the out-of-town donors had either read the Chronicle story online or from a link on Facebook.
Yesterday Mrs Clark said the school had received cash donations of $275, which would buy the bars and sweets for the student army to put into their pockets when they set out in the morning.
She is working with the Thistle sweet shop on Victoria Ave to source the sweet items.
Mrs Clark said she had also noticed that there were a lot of single muesli bars in the collection box, and discovered that the children were placing their lunch bars into the box.
On Wednesday afternoon, two big boxes "jam-packed full" with donations from the Castlecliff School families and donations from Wanganui Chronicle readers were sent to Christchurch.
Aramoho School and Room 2 at Marton School were combining their collections with Castlecliff School that would be sent next Wednesday directly to Christchurch for the students.
Mrs Clark said she wanted to thank the Chronicle for raising the awareness of the university students' requirements.
Mrs Clark said the school would continue to send boxes for six weeks.
Donations of muesli bars and sweets can be made to Castlecliff School or left at the Wanganui Chronicle reception, 59 Taupo Quay.
