Wanganui's trades facilitator will be visiting secondary schools to attract students to jobs in areas such as plumbing, building and engineering.
Susan Crawshaw said four young presenters would be visiting all Wanganui secondary schools to tell Year 10 students about careers in the trades.
The 14-year-olds will be told the advantages of the "earn while you learn" approach to a hands-on career.
The night for parents to hear about it will be August 26, at 7.30pm in the Wanganui City College hall. A gold coin donation would be appreciated, Mrs Crawshaw said.
Her campaign doesn't end with just one school visit. Interested young people will be able to make industry visits in November.
And next year there is to be a trade skills expo in July and presenters back to talk to students at their schools.
The presenters would emphasise to the aspiring young people that English and maths were important subjects for anyone in the trades.
Mrs Crawshaw said some students could then choose the appropriate subjects and be inspired to stay at school and work harder.
