TAIHAPE police late last night were investigating an incident involving a firearm at a residential house. It is believed a male may have died in the incident, but police would not confirm this.
A police central communications Sergeant Colin Graham said the house had been cordoned off and people were being spoken to by police.
The incident was reported about 9.30pm.
A Square Trust rescue helicopter spokesman in Palmerston North told NZPA a helicopter was called out to pick up a patient in Taihape about 10pm, but was then sent back to base before completing the mission.
