About 55 people gathered at Wanganui's Quaker settlement yesterday morning to spend an hour praying for world peace.
Organiser Gita Brooke (speaking, centre) said the group included people from the Bahai and Hindu faiths, and followers of Meher Baba.
The founder of Wanganui's Muslim Association, Kunja Ahmed, was out of town but had told her he would be there in spirit.
Mrs Brooke said she included Palestinians in her peace wish list because, although their country was not recognised as a nation, they were a suffering people which longed for this.
Many others in the gathering spoke, sang or chanted during the one-hour prayer session, and about 30 stayed for breakfast afterward.
The success of the International Day of Peace event was beyond Mrs Brooke's expectations, and she said people were already talking about what would be done next year.
