A woman killed after her car crashed into a creek near Mangakino has been named as 28-year-old Chloe Orme.
Orme, a local of Mangakino, died in a single-vehicle crash on Tahae Rd, in the Otorohanga District, yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the fatal crash about 4pm.
Police said Orme, the driver, was found dead in the vehicle, which was upside-down in the shallow stream. A female passenger managed to get out of the car to raise the alarm.
"Police extend our sympathies to her family and friends at this time," a spokeswoman said.
Stuff reported that Orme died a few hundred metres from her home at Ranginui Station, where she worked and lived with her partner and two children.
Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry, of Waikato Police, told Stuff Orme failed to negotiate a corner and lost control on the gravel.
The car subsequently slid across the road and shot through scrub before plunging down a bank into a stream.
"The passenger, a 24-year-old woman, managed to get out and crawl up the bank," Cherry said.
Stuff reported that rescuers had to wear life jackets and crews worked until 10pm to retrieve the car and body from the deep culvert.
The crash remains under investigation.
