Grammy winner and pop sensation Ella Yelich-O'Connor, aka Lorde, has been working closely with the Viva team over the summer months as our inaugural guest editor to bring to life our seventh quarterly issue dedicated to "Designing A Better Future", on sale tomorrow, February 28.

Viva editor Amanda Linnell says, "We're over the moon to collaborate with Ella on this very special issue. Ella was extremely hands-on, brainstorming story ideas, interviewing creatives, being part of the layout process and so much more. Her generosity of time and spirit towards this issue means it's particularly special. I know our readers will love it. The issue is brimming with great reads, we can't wait for New Zealanders to pick up a copy and enjoy it."

The 25-year-old invited writer Megan Dunn (Things I Learned at Art School) into her Auckland home for an intimate interview for Viva, and took her for a hilarious drive around her neighbourhood.

Elsewhere, Lorde speaks to Natasha Ratuva and Raihania Tipoki, two dedicated custodians of a family farm in South Wairarapa to discuss how they’re merging regenerative ideas and Indigenous practices to imagine a new future for farming.

We take you inside the growing movement of full immersion te reo, to meet the students and teachers reclaiming their language in this transformative journey.

Watch Lorde behind the scenes at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery.

Documentary film-maker Sharron Ward greets the guardians of Aotearoa, the people trying to protect it for future generations, to find out how they’re making meaningful change during a global and ecological crisis.

We also venture to paradise with a few of Lorde’s favourite places, and step inside the Auckland home and studio of the incredibly in-demand interior designer Katie Lockhart. Then, over in Wellington, we tour another architectural marvel: the iconic Te Whanganui-a-Tara, a Mediterranean village transplanted to the Southern Hemisphere.

To celebrate autumn, we showcase the very best in cosy cardis and silky skirts, embrace decadent paisley and brooding florals, and flaunt a few fashionable mood-boosters. As Viva's creative and fashion director Dan Ahwa says: "Life's too short to exclusively prescribe to a wardrobe of sensible classics."

Embrace seasonal recipes and support a trove of small-scale producers while you do it, and discover what’s hot in hospitality as restaurateurs share their bold new ideas for how they do business (including a new luxury precinct where lavish hand-held food made by chef favourite Elie Assaf will be served in paper bags from 10pm).

Finally, meet the class of 2022, who are paving their respective ways in art, activism and beyond, find the answer to whether pencil-thin, Y2K brows are making a comeback, and follow the beauty brands navigating the new standards of sustainability with aplomb.

The future starts now.
