Dean Buchanan checks into a Fijian resort with an adults-only private area
Getting there: We flew up on Fiji Airways in a well-appointed A330-200 with a good selection of "in-seat movies". We came back in a not-so well-appointed old 737-800 with no in-seat entertainment and crappy ceiling TV units with poor sound quality. The resort is 25 minutes from the airport and five minutes from the local port, which is your gateway to the outer islands.
Check-in experience: Friendly and personal in the private Waitui Beach Club office, by the main reception. The room: Average, with a separate bathroom, a kitchen and a cloakroom with a safe. A small balcony looked out over the beach club.
Price: $513 a night, with access to the Beach Club.
What's in the neighbourhood? The other Denerau resorts, mostly in walking distance, and the golf course.
What's on the site? The Waitui Beach Club is an adults-only private area, set well away from the main family pool and entertainment area with its own bar, infinity pool with swim-up bar, gym and excellent facilities. The snack menu and cocktail lists are really good. The perfect place to read, swim, relax and catch some sun with great views and top-notch friendly Fijian service. Towels, bottled water and sunscreen are supplied free of charge. The "piped music" was a little annoying, but you can escape to quieter areas closer to the beach.
The pool area emptied at 4.30pm and people disappeared to their rooms, to be back in time for Happy Hour from 5pm-6pm, with complimentary beer, bubbles, coconut and rum cocktails and snacks. Great way to end a day in the sun ... more drinks and a local two-piece band singing popular covers.
Toiletries: The basics, nothing special.
Food and drink: A good selection of restaurants, cuisine and price points. We really enjoyed V Restaurant, the Sofitel's fine-dining experience. Excellent service, very good food, excellent wine list, although over-priced.
The bed: Just okay.
Room with a view? Good, for a resort-style place.
Bathroom: Overdue for a refurbishment.
Free Wi-Fi? Yes, no problems.
Noise: Surprisingly quiet for such a large resort.
Room service: Good options and selection.
Value for money: 7/10. The Beach Club was excellent but the room was dated which capped the rating.
Perfect for: A long weekend away without the kids, or stay a week and take advantage of the many activities, surrounding islands and day trips.
The bottom line: A lovely resort with all the facilities you'd expect from an international Sofitel. Our room was in need of refurbishment but the Waitui Beach Club is an excellent escape for child-free relaxation and indulgence. The staff and service were excellent.
