The winner of our magic travel moments competition - and the prize of a $10,000 holiday in Asia for four - is Sidney Smith of Parnell.
Her story about the magic of a trek to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu was selected by Looi Tein Po, general manager of Singapore Airlines New Zealand, from the 2000-plus entries.
As a result she will enjoy the prize of return economy air tickets for four flying Singapore Airlines to Singapore, a two-night stopover in Singapore, including accommodation and excursions, and four return economy air tickets to any of SilkAir's 28 Asian destinations.
Sidney Smith's winning entry:
We had been walking for six days. We had climbed to a 4000m saddle and moon-danced down the scree on the other side. We had camped in an empty valley and bathed in the shock of melt water. We had trekked amongst spring flowers beside miniature canals rushing with water, so high up that condors swept past us at eye-level. We had slept overnight on tiny ledges. We had toiled endlessly up and down the massive steps built by the Incas. We had wound through the mist and lianas and exotic pendulous flowers of the cloud forest. Now, as we edged round a rocky bend on a narrow path above an abyss, a panorama of jungle-covered mountains appeared, deep in shadow. Suddenly, a shaft of evening sunshine lit a flattened mountain top far below us. We were struck dumb with awe. It was Machu Picchu.
