Climate change forum

Victoria University Professor James Renwick will speak at the Whanganui Science Forum's August meeting on climate change and the end of civilisation. The forum is at 7.30pm on Tuesday, August 28, at the Davis Lecture Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum. The cost is $4 for Science Forum members, $5 for others.

Fire on beach
Whanganui firefighters were called to a driftwood fire on Castlecliff Beach just before 1am yesterday. Senior Station Officer Jes Sorensen said the fire was one of a few recent unattended fires on the beach.

Dog trapped by gate
A dog that got its head caught in a gate was rescued by Fire and Emergency Whanganui staff yesterday. Firefighters were called to an Aramoho property around 7.15am. Senior Station Officer Jes Sorensen said some force was required to open the gate catch.


Three new constables
Three new Whanganui police officers were among 60 who graduated from the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua on Thursday - Constables Elizabeth Beech, Joshua Houlahan and Fraser Kinnerley. The graduates, aged from 19 to 45, included 23 women and 37 men.

Rents on rise
The average rental price for a medium-sized house (three or four bedrooms) in Whanganui has jumped $50 in the past year, according to the Trade Me Property Rental Index data for July. The figures show the average rental in July 2017 was $295, increasing to $320 in June 2018 and $345 in July 2018.
