"Most New Zealanders would improve their health by eating more fruit and vegetables - particularly people on low incomes - and this programme succeeds in getting more vegetables into our diets.
Hopefully by doing this, we will help reduce future demand on health services."
She said they hoped to extend the scheme and open additional hubs throughout the district.
"We are very grateful for the partnership with St Matthew's as this enabled the programme to get off the ground."
St Matthew's reverend Rosie Dell said she was delighted to be working with the community.
"This will make a real difference in people's health and wellbeing, and is a real opportunity for people to get together as volunteers working for a common purpose."
Foodtogether is a social enterprise group making it easier to access wholesale produce at an affordable cost.
It is committed to supporting local communities and puts 50 per cent of profits made back into the area.
Foodtogether started in Christchurch 20 years ago and now has hubs in Wellington, Auckland and Waikato.
Customers must place their order online at foodtogether.co.nz by noon on Wednesdays.
Pre-payment is essential but a cash option is also available.
The bags will be delivered on Thursdays, and volunteers sort and pack the items.
Customers can pick up their order between 11.30am and 1pm from St Matthew's.
Christchurch resident Diane has been ordering from Foodtogether and is satisfied with the quantity and quality of the produce.
"What I didn't expect as much was the sense of community I feel.
"I've joined the Facebook group where people share recipes and praise for the project."
