A truck that hit powerlines in Waihi has left hundreds of people without power for the next five hours.
Police were notified of a truck clipping powerlines on Smith St in Waihi at 8:36am.
A police media spokeswoman said the powerlines were damaged and motorists are asked to avoid the street while the powerlines are fixed.
Ambulance staff were called to the scene but a St John media spokeswoman said no one was taken to hospital.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand attended the scene to help with traffic control.
PowerCo stated on its website this morning it was investigating the cause of the power outage.
At least 774 properties have been affected.
The power went off at 8.33am and was estimated at being back on at 2pm.
