Three cows had to be euthanised on the side of a Southland road this morning after a trailer on a stock truck rolled near Gore.
Emergency services were called to the Waipahi Highway just north of MacGibbon Rd at 11am this morning after a trailer carrying cattle rolled.
A police spokeswoman said the driver was uninjured and out of the truck when officers arrived.
Some of the cattle were injured a vet was called.
Three of them to be euthanised, the spokeswoman said.
The road was closed and traffic was diverted for a time while a crane was brought in to right the trailer.
It had now reopened.
Sub zero temperatures had left some roads in Otago and Southland iced over and led to a few minor crashes across the region this morning and afternoon, she said.
At just before 3pm Alexandra was at -1.7degC and was yet get above 0degC for the day.
Ice warnings
Road users are advised to take extra care on State Highway 85 from Alexandra to Kyeburn, State Highway 6 from Queenstown to Cromwell and Kingston to Frankton because of ice.
Black ice is also causing concerns on State Highway 8 Lindis Pass and Omarama to Twizel.
Icy conditions were also expected on State Highway 98 from Dacre to Lorneville, State Highway 94 from Te Anau Downs to Gulliver River Bridge and from Te Anau to Mossburn and State Highway 96 from Winton to Mataura.
There is also a temporary speed limit of 50kmh on State Highway 96 from Wreys Bush to Dunearn due to slippery surfaces.
