Bellowing of weaner steers and heifers could be heard all around the Millers Road area on Thursday March 30 in Dannevirke.
Most had just spent their first night away from their mums and were telling the world about it.
Stock agents were soon telling the world by phone and text about the remarkable sale when close to 1000 weaner store cattle changed hands in the space of two hours' frenetic bidding.
"It was the best sale of weaner store cattle he had ever seen," PGG Wrightson's livestock representative Roger Watts said as prices started high and continued.
Many cattle averaged $4.50/kilo with the average weaner steer price of $788/hd well received by the vendors. One Pahiatua vendor said their price was $100 up on last year.
Weaner heifers were also in demand, with the average price for the 203 sold $670.
A benign autumn has resulted in strong demand for weaners, especially from the Manawatu. The big crowd had PGG Wrightson staff busy identifying the bidders while auctioneer Bjorn teased up the prices.
Top price of $1122 went to Waewaepa Station with a strong line of 20 Angus and 420 of the heavier steers sold for in excess of $1000/hd.
