At the last weaner beef sale of the season, prices slumped as the dry conditions in Hawke's Bay meant no buyers came south.
Local buyers in Pahiatua and Eketahuna with grass cashed in. One buyer from Pahiatua had bought no stock at the January 10 sale but went home delighted with his purchases.
Vendors were disappointed and 73 of the 229 stock (mostly steers) were passed in. One vendor was philosophical.
"You must forget the prices of recent sales. These prices are historically on a par with end-of-January sales."
For the record Friesian weaner bulls averaged $470, the top price of $485 going to Butler Farms Ltd.
Top price for white-faced weaner bulls ($585) and weaner heifers ($500) went again to DC and LHR Stephenson.
White-faced weaner bulls ranged from $405-585 with the average being $515. Heifers averaged $450. Next sale is for prime beef on Thursday February 9.
