A home DNA kit has led to plenty of questions for one family in Scotland.
Aberdeenshire man Gordon Petrie is looking for family members who may be in Stratford, after his interest in tracing his family tree was sparked when his daughter tried out a DNA kit.
Gordon's wife Catrina says they gave their daughter Chiara a DNA kit for Christmas this year.
That led to an interest in researching the family tree and Gordon has already found out a lot about their family tree, says Catrina.
"We found out on my father's maternal side that his ancestor was a boot steward who sadly died on the Titanic. It is so amazing what you find out when you start researching."
Gordon's side of the family also has some interesting history, says Catrina.
"His ancestors were fighting at Culloden along side Bonnie Prince Charlie, resulting with a price on the heads of his ancestors."
As they were on the losing side of that battle, Catrina says the ancestors then lost any fortune they had and had to start again.
Some ancestors built what turned out to be the last private bank in Aberdeenshire, while others left to find their fortune overseas.
Gordon's research has shown him some family members ended up in Stratford, and ran a watchmaking business for three generations in the town.
Catrina says their research has taught them the original watchmaker was John Petrie, and his mother's family are listed in a historical record book in Scotland.
"His mother's family were John Joiner or Joiners Bank, New Deer. We don't have old photos of this side of the family but have an extract from Aberdeenshire Epitaphs and inscriptions book mentioning them."
Catrina says it is interesting to see how many members of Gordon's family have ended up in similar trades, with many becoming engineers or watchmakers.
"My husband is a lighting design engineer and his brother Iain is a radio and radar engineer."
Gordon and Catrina know the name was Petrie, and are now hoping to make contact with members of the family who may be in New Zealand.
