In March, the Government announced a decision to extend funding for the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) and Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) programmes, as well as to establish a new Mobile Black Spot Fund (MBSF).
This is a "significant and valuable opportunity to areas like Stratford," says Kate Whareaitu, director of community services at Stratford District Council.
The benefits of better connectivity include positive impacts on health services, tourism and business, which is why council staff are now putting together a Registration of Interest (ROI) identifying how the district will support new infrastructure deployed under the programmes.
"The provision of UFB and related technologies is a game changer for driving economic growth and supporting community development. This type of access to the 'information super highway' is now expected by tourists and visitors.. We are absolutely striving to put the best possible ROI we can out to ensure every chance of gaining this funding as it is certainly not a given." Chief executive, Matt O'Mara says UFB has many benefits for communities and businesses.
This technology not only allows people to work from where they live but also supports new business models and services.
Stratford currently has 0 per cent UFB coverage, something the council want to see change. "With UFB it is easier for people to access services online in a timely manner and to be better connected to the world around them. The internet isn't just for young people or just for leisure, it is an integral part of the way we live, work and play."
As well as input from various areas of Stratford District Council, Kate says they will be seeking help from the community.
A questionnaire will go out in the Customer Satisfaction Survey, says Kate, who encourages people to fill it in as fully as possible.
Once the ROI is finalised, the next step is to put together a Digital Enablement Plan outlining the initiatives to be implemented in the community with UFB.
"We will be working with the community to help us put our best foot forward when it comes to showing the Government that Stratford should be prioritised in this roll-out. By working together with the community we will be able to give the Government the strongest arguments for our area and hopefully that will result in Stratford residents benefiting from UFB sooner rather than later."
