Following the removal of a chimney, the building occupied by the Eltham police is no longer considered earthquake prone.
South Taranaki District Council spokesperson Gerard Langford confirmed that the building was removed from the council's list of earthquake-prone buildings.
He says the police earlier inquired whether the building was listed on the register.
We said it was that was basically the extent of our conversation with them, until we heard that the police were considering moving.
He says the listings were made by visual inspection only.
The building owner subsequently contacted the council for an on-site reassessment. The main point of concern was the chimney, and on its prompt removal the building was removed from the register. The police will remain in the building for the time being.
