The New Zealand TAB paid out a record $11 million on Tuesday, its best ever Melbourne Cup day.
A record $13.4 million was wagered on the Melbourne Cup meeting at Flemington, meetings at Ellerslie and Trentham, and six Australian races, on which the TAB also took betting.
The large proportion of thebetting, nearly $6.6 million, was on the Melbourne Cup race, TAB racing manager Michael Dore said.
"Though we didn't quite break the record for betting on the Melbourne Cup itself, there was strong interest in racing at Ellerslie and Trentham, which helped us achieve a record Melbourne Cup day," Dore said.
