BOWLS

WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Leamington Spa, England)

The New Zealand four were eliminated from medals contention yesterday.

Jo Edwards, Sharon Sims, Val Smith and Wendy Jensen went down 16-12 to Jersey in the quarter-finals.

They later recovered to register an 18-10 victory over the Philippines to set up a playoff against South Africa for fifth place today.

The New Zealand made a bright start against eventual finalists Jersey, who remained unbeaten, but struggled throughout the rest of the match.

The turning point came on the 16th end when Jersey, leading by a single shot, scored a five to push the margin out to six.

Edwards replied with a single, leaving her side needing a five on the final end.

At one stage the four held the five required shots, but the end was killed, leaving New Zealand out of medals contention and the team's Taylor Trophy dreams in tatters.

LIFESAVING

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Livorno)

Canterbury's Georgina Toomey was the toast of the New Zealand team after winning the silver medal in the 50m mannequin carry yesterday.

Toomey, 18, was less than one second behind Italian Elena Prelle, who recorded a world-record time of 35.69s in the pool event.

She was one of a handful of New Zealand medallists, along with Dean Kent, who won a bronze in the 200m obstacle race before teaming with fellow Olympians Moss Burmester and Steve Ferguson and Glenn Anderson for another bronze in the 4x50m obstacle relay.

"Dean was just under 0.2s from the silver medal, which was also an outstanding performance," New Zealand manager Jim Warwick said.

The first day of pool competition produced four world records, with the strongest performance coming in the men's 4x50m obstacle relay.
